Dr Gavin Shang graduated with a Bachelor degree in Medicine and Surgery (MBBCH) in 2002 from the Medical School of the University of the Witwatersrand (WITS).
Following Internship and Community Service government years, he then completed a post-graduate Masters degree in Sports and Exercise Medicine (MPhil Sports Med) in 2008 from the University of Cape Town (UCT) and the Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSISA).
He was based and trained at the Centre for Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics (CSMO), and was then appointed as a Sports Medicine Specialist at the Orthosports Medical Centre (Dubai, UAE) in 2008 – 2009 before returning to South Africa.
His private practice is presently based at the CSMO for consulting patients with sports related injuries and medical conditions affected by or related to activity.
He regularly lectures and talks on varied topics in sports and exercise medicine to colleagues, teams and the public; and continues to provide articles for international and locally recognized journals and publications.
He has been involved with many various sporting events, teams and individuals from amateur to professional levels both locally and abroad.
He is currently the Sports Medicine Consultant to the South African Hockey Association and the team doctor for the South African Men’s and Womens’s National Hockey Teams.
