BACKGROUND

I have a diverse professional background as an international and local medical specialist in the field of Sports and Exercise Medicine (SEM). I am a clinical consultant, medical director, and an international traveling team physician.

I am a SEM physician and senior partner based at the Centre for Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics (CSMO – Rosebank, Johannesburg) and an associate member of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine, United Kingdom (AM FSEM UK)

I am the Medical Director for the South African Hockey Association and the Traveling Team Physician for both the Senior Ladies and Men’s National teams for over 150 test matches across World Cups, Africa Cups, the FIH Pro League, the FIH World League, the Olympics and the Commonwealth Games. I have developed the SA Hockey medical infrastructures from inception to implementation since 2010.

I have been a traveling team physician for the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) and TeamSA at the following international events:

• 2020 / 2021 Olympic Games (Tokyo, Japan) – Traveling Team Physician.
• 2022 Commonwealth Games (Birmingham, United Kingdom) – COVID-19 Liaison Officer and Traveling Team Physician.
• 2024 All Africa Games (Ghana) – Chief Medical Officer and Traveling Team Physician.
• 2024 Olympic Games (Paris France) – Traveling Team Physician.

 I have gained extensive exposure and experience in the areas of SEM, applied sports science, and athletic performance, as well as to the various challenges in local and international business development and management within this specialized sub-sector of the healthcare industry.

I am a consultant to medical technology companies in the areas of integration and management of data to improve athletic performance and health management.

I am a previous provincial and premier league field hockey player, and am an active ultra-endurance road and trail runner, and mountaineer.

I deliver lectures, talks, presentations, and articles on various SEM topics for both international and local journals and publications.

I have and continue to be involved as the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Medical Director and SEM Physician for various professional and amateur sporting codes. These include SA Hockey, SASCOC, the England and Wales Cricket Board, the FIH, SA Cricket, The European Golf Tour, the ATP and WTA, and previously for the HSBC World Rugby Sevens.

I am currently furthering my academic studies with my PhD in Sports and Exercise Medicine at the University of Pretoria with a focus on ultra-endurance running. Subsequent publications will be focused on medical encounters during these races and interventions towards prevention of medical issues in this area of endurance athletes and physical activity.
